It was in 2002 World cup, 16 June to be exact: the day when Spain won over Republic of Ireland through penalty. I was no football fan at that time—just one of those people who watched football on its special occasion, like the World Cup. Anyway, in that match, I was suddenly attracted to Spain's gorgeous goalkeeper did a great job by saving the penalties. I was so amazed. I tried to look at the name behind his jersey, and yes kids… that is the story of how I met Iker Casillas.
He is a super-talented goalkeeper. With his club, Real Madrid, he has won four La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions league. Last two years, Spain won the UEFA EURO Cup with him as the captain. Then, this year is definitely a very special year for him. Besides Spain won the World Cup, Casillas also won the Golden Glove award (the best goalkeeper in the competition). I have been waiting for this moment for years (I bet he is too) and finally, the time has come!
"It's an honour and a pleasure. This is one of those awards that you look for but don't expect to win. Now that I've won it, it's time to go out and enjoy it"
"I'm not a saint, not at all. I have a lot of experience after putting in a lot. I have been gifted and have had lots of support from all my family and friends, so I am really overjoyed today."
"That's what we're here for. A goalkeeper's job is all about stopping your opponents from scoring, no matter how, and it's a team job that you work on with your defense and which everyone deserve some recognition for. I'm so happy. It's been an unforgettable night."
"It was not easy, but luckily we managed to win. We've earned this victory from beginning to end. It's been almost 50 days of full concentration. That in itself is very complicated, very difficult and gives an idea of what this group had one."
"This is something you dream about as a child, winning a cup that you've seen Brazil, France, and Italy win. It's something you see in video games and on TV. It's something you see everywhere but can never picture happening to you. To be honest, I still can't believe it. It is truly a special time and certainly a much happier moment than we won the European championships. We are now the world champions."
Although most medias and people say Andre Iniesta was the man of the match of the World Cup final last Sunday. I personally think Iker Casillas was the man to praise. He played very well during that match, saving plenty of shoots on goal from the Dutch. He was the Spain true hero, my true hero ☺
